Plans vs. Planning
"In preparing for battle, I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable."
~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
How many times have you scrapped a plan, threw up your hands in despair, ready to give up?
We're going into our eighth year of homeschooling, and although it's not a battle, some days feel like it. I've found that success isn't in the plan, but in the planning.
At first glance, it looks like those two things should be the same. However, based on the number of laminated schedules I've thrown in the trash over the years, I'd have to say they're different.
Planning is thinking. It's figuring out what you value, where you're headed, and what you think it will take to get there.
Plans are actions we think we'll need to take to accomplish our planning goals.
I've found over the years that there are always things I didn't consider when creating my plan, but the long-range planning - the goals - stay the same.
If you've done your planning, it's easy (or easier) to adjust your plans. You'll know where you're going, even if you end up taking a few unexpected backroads and detours.
